New policy document will give more importance to pedestrians Chennai is set to adopt street design guidelines to put in place a mechanism for redeveloping the existing street system across 44,000 stretches, providing transportation choices and making the city liveable.Five years after the Chennai Corporation adopted the Non-Motorised Transport Policy, the new guidelines are expected to offer a solution to the challenge of equitable allocation of space for pedestrians and motorists.“It is very important for us to conduct workshops of engineers from Chennai Corporation and other line agencies,” said an official.After adopting the guidelines, the Chennai Corporation will encourage local residents, activists, NGOs working in the field related to traffic and transportation to refer to the document for every initiative.
