Lester Ward Lester Frank Ward (1841–1913) was born in Joliet, Illinois. He was the youngest of 10 children of a laborer who moved the family frequently looking for new work. They traveled by covered wagon to Iowa in 1855. The children worked and hunted to help feed the family. Ward had only intermittent formal schooling and was largely self-educated.
