NIFT exam is an entrance exam that is conducted by the National Institute of Fashion and Technology(NIFT). NIFT is one of the top designing Institutes in India. Just like IIM is for Business Management, IIT is for Engineering in the same way NIFT is specialized for Designing courses. In this article we will cover NIFT Exam Info for all the aspirants.


There are many NIFT domestic centres in India like Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Shillong, Raebareli and Srinagar. There are many more upcoming centres that are being created for the students. The seats have been increasing over the years, in 2019 there were 3457 seats available this year in 2020 there are 4297 seats available.


NIFT Exam Courses:


 NIFT offers various courses for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate  students.

The courses for Undergraduate students are:

  1. Bachelor of Design(Bdes)
  2. Bachelor of Fashion Technology 


For the post graduate students there are courses like:

  1. Master of Design
  2. Master of Fashion Technology
  3. Master of Fashion Management



NIFT Exam Entrance Test


There are three test that you need to qualify for getting into NIFT:

  1. General Ability Test (GAT)
  2. Creative Aptitude Test(CAT)
  3. Situation Test (Cancelled for 2020 test takers) 


The candidates need to first appear for the GAT exam, after they qualify in GAT exam then they are eligible for giving CAT exam.


For the admission of Undergraduate course the test takers need to give all the above tests that is CAT, GAT and situation test. Whereas the postgraduate students need to give CAT and GAT but instead of situation test they have group discussion and personal interview.

Bachelor of Design

The candidates should complete 10+2 from a recognised board with passing marks will be eligible to appear for the entrance test.

Bachelor of Fashion Technology

The candidates should complete 10+2 from a recognised board with passing marks, wherein the candidates should have compulsorily studied Physics, chemistry and Maths. They should also have passing marks.

Master of Design

The candidate should have an eligible undergraduate degree from the recognised university.

Master of Fashion Technology

The candidate should have pursued BFTech at an undergraduate level to be eligible for MFTech

Masters of Fashion Management

The candidate should have an eligible undergraduate degree from the recognised university.



NIFT Exam Syllabus


Let's have a look at the NIFT Exam syllabus which include all CAT, GAT and Situation Test:


1) General Ability Test(GAT)


There are four sections in GAT that are: i)quantitative Ability

ii)Communication Ability and English Comprehension

iii)Analytical ability and Logical Ability

iv) General Knowledge and current affairs.


Quantitative Ability:


  1. Addition
  2.  Multiplication
  3. Division
  4.  Fractions
  5. Percentage
  6.  Rate of Interest
  7. Work and Task
  8.  Ratio and Proportion
  9.  Distance


Communication Ability and Logical Ability:


  1. Synonyms
  2.  Antonyms
  3. Words with corresponding meanings
  4. Singular Plural
  5.  One word substitutes
  6.  Idioms and phrases
  7.  Correct spellings,
  8. Comprehend a situation from a given passage etc


General Knowledge:


  1. These questions are generally based on the current affairs of the country as well as the world. To excel in this section make a habit of reading newspapers daily.


The GAT paper is a pen and paper mode test with the duration of 2 hours. This test is specially designed to judge the Reasoning, Logical and creative skills of the candidate.



2) Creative Aptitude Test(CAT)


  1. The NIFT CAT exam is judged by the creative and the observational skills of the candidate.
  2.  The questions are more in the aspect of innovation and development of a concept and also on the ability to design a given product creatively.
  3. The syllabus is mainly about Design Theory, Colour Terminology, Inspiration & Design Development, Colour Psychology & Optical Illusions, Elements & Principles Of Design, Mood, Theme & Colour Inter-relationship ect. 



3) Situation Ability Test


  1. This test is all about material handling tests, it is judged on the basis of the drawing or the creativity skills. The candidates are given different situations and they need to design those things on the basis of the situation using their creativity skills. This paper has been cancelled for NIFT 2020 test takers.


NIFT Exam tips


1. Upgrade your observational and visualisation skills


This entrance test assesses your creative and imaginative skills, in addition the questions are framed in such a way that they test your general awareness, observation, visualisation skills. Besides being good at sketching you need to be good at these skills.


2. Improve speed


 For a good NIFT Exam preparation strategy you must work on your speed. Having a great creativity and visualisation skill will not matter if you do not have a good speed. The whole idea of this test is to showcase your creative skills within a stipulated time. If you do not have a good speed then this test might be difficult for you.


3. Solve sample paper

Practice a good amount of sample paper as it will help you in increasing your speed for writing this test as well as will give you an idea about the paper pattern of the paper.
