This is the right time to start preparing for UPSC 2020 exam.

With the unpredictable nature of the exam, the more rigorously you prepare the better. This article discusses some important topics.

1. Salient features of Indian Society, Diversity of India: The most unique feature of India is "Unity in Diversity" since India is a country that is home to people of different religions and cultures and there is no fragmentation of society based on that. This idea has been at the core of multiple political and social movements.

The Indian society has been categorized as follows-

Geographical component- With different climate, temperature, fauna, people vegetation, and so on, there are multiple regions in India like plateau of central India and Deccan, northern plains, Himalaya, Western & Eastern Ghats, Thar Desert, etc.

Religious Component- Diversity is also visible in the spheres of religion.

When a war or a disaster occurs, religious unity is particularly visible.

Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and the Bahá'í Faith are major religions of India.

Cultural Component- The living example of India’s fundamental cultural unity is the composite culture of India. Among the diverse communities in India, a peculiar type of culture and civilization utterly different from any other type in the world has evolved.

Political Element- Although there were 600 princely states during British India, the country has been brought under one central authority after Independence.

Linguistic Element- Despite having 122 major languages and 1599 dialects, language has always played the role of an adhesive power in the country.

2. The role of women in India has changed drastically over the last few years and they have enhanced their status to become equal with men.

There is no doubt that women's organizations have had an important part to play to make that happen.

Population, poverty and developmental issues have always acted as a hindrance to the growth of the country.

This has always been a part of the debate among the policymakers of India.

The need of the hour is for the government to focus on and make policies for inclusive growth.

3. Effects of globalization on Indian society: Globalization has had both positive and negative effects on Indian society.

The economic impact has led to an increase in the number of jobs, has given more choices to the consumer, higher disposable income, shrinking of the agricultural sector and an increase in healthcare costs.

The sociology-economic impact has led to more access to education, growth of cities, increase of nuclear family culture and vulnerability of old age people.

The psychological impact on Indian society has resulted in the development of bi cultural identity which means that one part of the identity is rooted in the local culture while the other part arises due to the awareness of the global world. Growth of self-selected culture is also on the rise as people tend to form groups with like-minded people which is based on a number of factors.

You can strategize and start preparing for the exam till the time UPSC 2020 vacancy is announced.

All the best for UPSC2020!
