House to House verification for National Population Register

A new official manual for the NPR (National Population Register) states that the Narendra Modi government would use door to door data verification as the method to update its database for 19 crore Indian residents.

The move, the government has clarified, is not linked to the ongoing debate about the CItizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and NRC (National Register of Citizens).

The government had held the original NPR exercise in 2010 and then updated in 2015.

The new update would occur alongside the Census data collection from April-September 2020.

The news is being taken with a lot of skepticism, owing to the protests against implementation of the NRC and CAA over the ongoing month.

Public fears are rife about possible misuse of the data which would be collected during this exercise.
