Citizenship Act


The Supreme Court has refused an interim stay on the implementation of the Citizenship Act over a batch of 59 petitions challenging the validity of the act. It has given a next date for hearing on the matter on January 22.


The context:

The Citizenship Act has led to massive protests and agitations across the country, from a wide range of groups. While some are arguing against the exclusion of immigrants from the Muslim community under the Act, others are protesting over fears that the extension of citizen status to a wide range of refugee migrants will dilute the ethnicity of the areas where these new citizens would settle - like West Bengal and Assam.

After the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) ordered the reinstatement of Cyrus Pallonji Mistry as the Chairman of the Tata Group, the company, led by Ratan Tata, may approach the Supreme Court on the issue.


The NCLAT order has termed the ouster of Mistry as illegal.


The context:

Mistry’s tenure as the chairman of Tata Group came to end over implications that the Pallonji family was interfering in the day-to-day working of the group. Mistry had approached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) over the issue earlier, but had lost that legal battle in July 2018.

Nirbhaya Case Convict Appeal Rejected


The Supreme Court has rejected the review plea for one of the death row convicts in the Nirbhaya case. The court has allowed him to file for a mercy plea with the President of India.


The context:

The Nirbhaya case has been in the purview of courts since 2013, when the five accused where chargesheeted by the Delhi Police. This was followed up a case separately against one juvenile offender.



The case brought to light the need for tougher rape laws and punishments. The brutality involved led to demands for death penalty for all convicts. The case has taken more than six years through the due process of law, leading to demands for faster convictions as well.
