Law is considered as the best options to boost your career in India. If you want to become a great lawyer, it is highly recommended to go to a National Law Universities(NLUs). This test is generally taken after the 12th grade for admission to undergraduate programs in law and after graduation in law for masters are offered by these law schools. But now the question is what is the procedure or what are the exams that you need to give to enter into National Law universities.


The answer is CLAT examination, CLAT refers to Common Law Admission Test, which is a basic entrance exam for the law. By giving this exam you will be eligible to take admission into any of the 22(NLUs) and several other colleges.


CLAT is conducted by Consortium National Law Universities. This exam is conducted once in a year and the mode of exam is offline.


According to the latest update of CLAT 2020, this year exam would be conducted computer-based i.e. online test because of the COVID situation, the students will be allotted with nearby centres.

CLAT Exam: Eligibility


There are two categories of students who are eligible to give this exam:


  1. Undergraduate


Any student who has cleared(10+2) or equivalent with not less than 45% marks in aggregate is eligible for giving this exam. For candidates belonging to SC and ST categories, they need to score at least 40% in the aggregate subjects.


2. Post Graduate


A degree from a recognized university with not less than 55% marks in aggregate is eligible for giving this exam. For candidates belonging to SC and ST categories, they need to score at least 50% in the aggregate subjects.

There is no age limit for giving the CLAT exam.



CLAT Exam: Paper Pattern


The mode of paper is a pen and paper-based test that is offline with a duration of 120 minutes (2 hours). The type of questions asked are Multiple choice based questions and the language of question is going to be English. There will be 150 questions asked and each question will carry 1 mark. It will be a 150 mark question paper.


The descriptive question is only for the postgraduate students, there will be no descriptive paper for undergraduate students.

For every wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted.



CLAT Exam: Syllabus


There are 5 sections for the CLAT exam and they are as follows:


  1. English language


The questions are based on the comprehension passages and grammar. The main motive of this section is to test the basic understanding of passages, grammar, the vocabulary of a student. The level of questions is of Class 12th level. The number of questions asked is 28-32 questions.


2. General knowledge and current affair


The GK sections consist of 35-39 questions, majorly consisting of question-based on economic and government policy, history and culture, Polity, National and international events. It is advisable to be up to date about the current affairs going all over the world for this section and to read newspapers every day.


3. Quantitative techniques


The question is generally of class 10th level. The students need to brush up their basics of algebra, mensuration and statistics. There will be 13-17 questions asked for this section.


4. Legal aptitude


The questions in this section will be more of philosophical enquiry and related to legal matters of the countries. But not to worry the questions will be more in terms of general knowledge rather than deep legal questions. The questions will be easily answered by any student.


5.Logical Reasoning


This section will carry 300 words passages and you need to answer questions from the passages. The motive of this section is to test the analytical and logical skills of the candidate.
