UGC NET Exam Pattern is an attribute that describes the overall range of the NET exam. The factors like exam mode, the duration of the exam, total number of questions, what subjects the exam will comprise of, etc., everything is covered under exam pattern.

Set by National Testing Agency (NTA), the exam pattern is a component that usually does not see any major changes. However, in the last few years revisions have taken place in the exam pattern.

The prevalent exam pattern has been designed to effectively test the teaching skills of the candidate. Hence, it is imperative for you to understand the exam pattern now, at the awareness phase of the exam itself.

Talking about the UGC NET Exam Pattern 2023, I have provided the latest and detailed syllabus as per the official notification of UGC NET June 2023.

While the Paper 1 carries 50 MCQs with a total of 100 marks. The Paper 2 entails 100 MCQs of a total 200 marks. There is no negative marking for either of the papers.

Both the papers are concluded in a 3-hour duration and are conducted in online mode.

The paper 1 is common for the all the candidates and Paper 2 varies according to the choice of subject of the student and comes with a whopping 200 marks.

It should be noted that the two papers are conducted sequentially without any break in between. Further, there is no set duration for either paper and thus you are free to allocate your time whichever way you deem fit.

However, it is vital to devote your time wisely and thus I suggest you use approximately 60 minutes for Paper 1 & the remaining 120 minutes for Paper 2.

To give you a thorough view of the UGC NET Exam Pattern, I’ve compiled all the factors that have an impact on the exam, and presented it in a concise manner for your better comprehension.

UGC NET Exam Pattern 2023 – Paper 1

UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 1 is an objective type of examination constituting 50 questions with a time duration of 60 minutes (1 hour). For every right answer, the candidate scores +2 marks.

However, there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Therefore, you can attempt as many questions as you can during the actual exam.

That said, even though the marks of both Paper 1 & Paper 2, together make the final result, it is still advisable for the candidate to try to score the maximum marks in Paper 1.

The examination cycle is conducted over a period of time to accommodate the various subjects catered by the UGC NET exam.

UGC NET Exam Pattern 2023– Paper 2

Talking about Paper 2, it is also an objective type of examination like Paper 1. With the same criteria as Paper 1, there are a total of 100 questions with 2 marks awarded for every right answer and no negative marking for incorrect answer. Total time duration for Paper 2 is 120 minutes (2 hours).

Now unlike Paper 1, Paper 2 depends on the subject you want to get your certification in. The syllabus for UGC NET Paper 2 is equivalent to the syllabus of Graduation and Post-Graduation of the particular subject you have as Paper 2.

Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are held on the same day with a total exam duration of 180 minutes (3 hours) and the overall selection depends on the marks obtained by a candidate in both the exams.

So, it is very important for a student to score equally good marks in both the exams as just cracking the cut off will not help you to achieve a certificate of UGC NET JRF.

Note: Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be set in both language English and Hindi. A candidate who is giving the exam has to secure minimum marks independently in each paper and total also.
